Khouch is 29 years old and is one of 3 daughters living among 12 siblings in Donsor Village, Cambodia. When her parents divorced this plunged the family in further deprivation, forcing Khouch to set out in search of a job in Phnom Penh. One day Khouch encountered a woman who persuaded her to marry a Chinese man and so with the promise of good fortune she agreed, and was brought into China through Vietnam’s border.

Khouch was moved from place to place to evade Chinese police but eventually was arrested and sent to a detention center for three weeks and to prison for eight months,
where she was treated poorly with not enough food to eat. In May 2021, she was sent back to Cambodia and in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, was admitted into Hagar Cambodia’s “Home of Love” Foster Family. With no identification or any means of contacting her family, Hagar and MoSVY
connected Khouch with her mother.

On the 29th of May, Khouch reintegrated with her family, receiving Hagar’s support through health check ups and case
management. Additionally, Hagar was also able to aid in setting up a small business selling soft drink and sugar cane juice. In a short period, demand slowly picked up in her community and Khouch was able to expand her business by
selling groceries.

“I am very happy to see and get my daughter back home safety and also Hagar has provided supports to her including our family, especially a decent business for my daughter. I believe that with all what she has learned from Hagar team, she will be able to manage and expand her business even after Hagar stop supporting her.

I really could not find any word to say better than Thank You Hagar. Poor people like us, if we are relying on my income, even for a whole of my life, we will not be able to capitalized for my children to run a business like this as our daily income is used for a daily household consumption only and there is nothing left to be a capital for business set up,” her mother said.
