In the vibrant countryside of Vietnam, a transformative initiative is changing lives, one small creature at a time. Hagar Vietnam’s Animal Bank economic empowerment programme is an innovative approach to not only empower survivors of human trafficking and gender-based violence but also to promote sustainable livelihoods.

Empowering Lives

In the first phase of the project, 63 vulnerable women and their families from the Yen Bai province, including at least 252 children and other household members, were identified to benefit from Animal Bank scheme. Women were provided with a pair of female and male animals.  Intensive animal husbandry training was given to support survivors in breeding and selling meat.

Throughout the year, survivors were mentored by Hagar staff, with the support of Yen Bai’s Women’s Union. Once the first cycle of breeding is complete, the families give one male and one female animal to a communal ‘bank’ to be distributed to additional beneficiaries in the second phase of the project.

Shelagh visits the Animal Bank

This week Shelagh, Hagar UK Director, took time out to visit our projects in Vietnam. Here she met families who are involved in the Animal Bank project, who are now scaling up their breeding programmes so that the impact can be sustainable for the future.

Watch now as she talks more about the project that is providing local communities with a brighter future.
